Weekend forecast for Atlanta and North Georgia

It's no surprise that it can get hot in Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas by late July. Temperatures climbing into the 100s are common this time of the year.

However, the GFS model is suggesting extremely hot, record temperatures could build over Oklahoma, potentially extending into north Texas and south Kansas next week.

Now, the GFS model is notorious for painting a very hot picture this time of the year, but it's typically 10-14 days out so you know not to necessarily trust such a scenario. But, the GFS is showing these hot temperatures next week (July 18-21) so it needs to be monitored very closely.

The GFS is showing temperatures widespread exceeding 110 degrees, potentially nearing 120 in Oklahoma. The all-time hottest temperature recorded in Oklahoma is 120 degrees (Kansas has reached 121 with Texas also hitting 120).

It's too early to say if temperatures will get this hot but temperatures nearing 110 looks likely next week with the potential to climb even higher. An important reminder, heat is the number one weather-related killer in the U.S.

Across the Southeast, heavy storms will likely develop along and south of a slow-moving frontal boundary. The airmass along and near the Gulf and Southeast coasts is quite saturated. It won't take much lift in the atmosphere to generate storms capable of producing heavy rainfall and flooding. In fact, Montgomery, Alabama is already under a flash flood warning from heavy rains this morning.

Parts of the Four Corners region are under a flooding risk, due to monsoonal flow. Arizona and Utah are on the western periphery of the big ridge causing all of the hot weather in the central U.S. A large chunk of New Mexico has had the bulk of the heavy rain over the last 30 days, but we'll see the heaviest rainfall favor Arizona, Utah, western/northwestern New Mexico, and western Colorado this time. 

A region stretching across parts of the Midwest and Northern Plains will have a risk of some flooding in places. A shortwave will rotate along the periphery of the big ridge and provide good chances of widespread rainfall today and tomorrow. Even beyond the next couple of days, we'll have to monitor any shortwave that moves along the ridge periphery for increased rain and storm chances.

Three Areas to Watch for Flooding Potential Thursday and Friday

A favorable pattern for numerous rounds of moderate to heavy rainfall will persist for at least several days across the lower Southeast and Florida. Ridging dominated the pattern earlier in the summer, which unfortunately favored anomalous heat and dry conditions. However, the last couple of weeks has brought a welcome change for many, with more widespread rainfall. 

Prominent ridging will generally remain west of the region, while Bermuda ridging will tend to stay centered offshore. Anytime the Southeast finds itself positioned inside the weakness between two ridges, rain and storm chances are usually heightened for at least part of the time. The major downside is that this pattern provides no real protection from tropical cyclones impacting the region, but we’ll cross that bridge if we foresee this pattern persisting into August.

Despite recent rainfall, moderate to severe drought conditions still remain a concern for a decent chunk of the region. The current pattern will certainly help with that, but there’s usually a sort of hit-and-miss nature to storm activity in the summer, even when it’s expected to be more widespread. If we take a look at projected rainfall totals over the next 7-days, we see that the highest totals will likely occur closer to the Gulf Coast and Florida. Also, areas along the eastern Carolinas will have pretty high totals as well.

A frontal boundary will gradually sag southward this week before another front reinforces dry air behind it. This explains why Tennessee and the upper Gulf coast states, after today, will have drier and less humid weather, relative to the lower half of the Southeast. Taking a look at projected 24-h rainfall totals moving forward in time, we see that the heavier rainfall chances become more confined to the lower half of the Southeast and Florida this week along and south of the front.

To summarize, heavy rain and storm chances will persist across the lower half of the Southeast, and Florida into at least the weekend. A drying trend is to be expected across Tennessee and the northern Gulf Coast states after today behind the front. However, it shouldn’t be but a few days, at most, before humid and stormy conditions return to those areas.

Soaking Rains and Flooding Expected for Parts of the Southeast

The summer-like weather pattern North Georgia has been stuck in has started to break down.

An upper area of high pressure controlled the weather, delivering hot temperatures for weeks to North Georgia. Not only were temperatures hot, but dewpoints were high, causing heat indices to soar above 110 degrees.

That upper high has shifted west, shaving several degrees off of temperatures. The flow on the eastern side of this ridge is sending a cold front into North Georgia tonight.

This will spark thunderstorms and drop temperatures over the next 24 hours. Highs on Sunday will primarily be in the mid-80s.

Even cooler temperatures are expected Monday with highs in the lower 80s.

The extended outlook aslo favors below average temperatures.

A cold front will bring cooler temperatures and a few storms to North Georgia.

The heat has been ON from the Southern Plains to the southeastern U.S. coast. An expansive area of heat advisories and excessive heat warnings exist today across a majority of the nation’s southeast quadrant. Temperatures have been above average across much of the U.S., but it’s the above-average water vapor in the air that’s made temperatures feel considerably hotter. Thankfully, a pattern change will bring cooler and less humid air to eastern parts of the U.S. soon, though not for all.

Large-scale ridging, which has dominated the pattern recently, will continue retrograding westward over the weekend into next week. Unfortunately, Texas and the Plains will continue experiencing excessive heat. However, areas across the Ohio Valley, most of Tennessee, and parts of the Southeast (generally from Alabama eastward) will have lower temperatures before the weekend ends. Now, remember, having lower temperatures in the middle of July is still hot in the Southeast, but we’ll take what we can get. 

As the big ridge retrogrades west, surface high pressure will build into the Great Lakes region and Ohio Valley on the backside of a trough moving across eastern Canada. This storm system will usher in a cool front that should actually make it to the Gulf Coast by the weekend’s end. Now, temperatures will remain humid along the Gulf Coast and Florida, but the less humid and “cooler” air should move as far south as the northern Gulf coast states. Your weather apps are already probably showing a noticeable drop in the high temperature coming soon. That’s why.

Rain and storms will develop across the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley, and Mid-Atlantic over the next day or two, but once the front passes, conditions will clear. The Southeast won’t quite get the same result, especially across the lower half of the Gulf coast states and eastern Carolinas. With the front hanging around the Gulf Coast for a while, those regions will still favor daily thunderstorm activity, even this weekend, and humid conditions.

By the middle of next week, if not a tad sooner, winds from the south/southeast will re-moisten areas across the remainder of the Southeast and Tennessee Valley, bringing back those storm chances. To the north, troughing will favor at least one more intrusion of cooler and drier air as far south as the Ohio Valley and inland New England. The lower Plains will remain hot, and much of the western U.S. will have above-average temperatures next week.
